Abstract
The Diels-Alder adducts 7a,b by acidic hydrolysis afford the alcohols 8a,b which in the presence of silica gel, rearrange into the qunizarin derivative 10a and minor amounts of the naphthofuran 11. The rearrangement of 8a,b with silica gel in the presence of ethanol affords the naphthofuran type products 12 and 15. The thermal rearrangement of alcohols 8a,b by heating in benzene solution affords a mixture of the rearranged products 10a,b and the spirocompound 18. Under similar thermal conditions, the alcohol 3 produced the leuconaphthazarin derivative 19 and the spirocompound 20.

Studies on quinones. 28. Novel rearrangements of diels-alder adducts of naphtho- and anthradiquinones*1

Abstract
The Diels-Alder adducts 7a,b by acidic hydrolysis afford the alcohols 8a,b which in the presence of silica gel, rearrange into the qunizarin derivative 10a and minor amounts of the naphthofuran 11. The rearrangement of 8a,b with silica gel in the presence of ethanol affords the naphthofuran type products 12 and 15. The thermal rearrangement of alcohols 8a,b by heating in benzene solution affords a mixture of the rearranged products 10a,b and the spirocompound 18. Under similar thermal conditions, the alcohol 3 produced the leuconaphthazarin derivative 19 and the spirocompound 20.

Abstract
Current extractive metallurgy techniques for lead refining by the Betts Electrorefining Process (BEP)are reviewed. In the BEP, refined lead (> 99.99%) can be produced by the electrorefining of impurelead anodes. The process relies on the selective dissolution of lead which leaves behind a strong andadherent layer of solids (slimes) containing the noble impurities originally present in the anode. Theproperties of this layer are closely linked to the physical metallurgy of the lead anode. Careful controlof microstructure and level of impurities in the lead anode is required, and an essential attribute of
the process is the use of the H2SiF6-PbSiF6 electrolyte. This paper focuses mainly on the relationship between the anodic process and its effects. The effect of impurities and electrolysis parameters on the cathodic process are also reviewed. Descriptions of industrial operations of the BEP throughout the world are tabulated

Abstract
People living in a given culture generally are not conscious of the laws that govern their linguistic system, yet they can immediately recognize if a speaker is using the system correctly. The so-called hidden rules comprise a major part of sociolinguistics. It is the purpose in this paper to relate some specific examples of sociolinguistic principles as they affect language teaching. Although the examples are taken from Portuguese, the situations are intended to apply to the teaching of foreign langages in general. The first part of the study treats practical matters of gathering sociolinguistic data. In the ensuing sections on phonology and syntax the discrepancy between actual language use and typical learning materials is presented and suggestions for improvement are offered. The part on interactional rules purports to show one area of neglect in traditional teaching materials. The final section summarizes ideas on the importance of broadening language learning to include research from sociolinguistics.

Abstract
The effects of such parameters as the filler volume fraction, particle size, aspect ratio, modulus and strength of filler, resin-filler adhesion, and toughness of the matrix on the stiffness, strength, and toughness of particulate-filled epoxy resins were evaluated. Abstract
The limitations of formal administrative controls in organizations performing complex production tasks have created the need for less obtrusive forms of management control. When formal administrative controls cannot cater to the unpredictability of complex work demands, one strategy is to employ “professionals” who have been trained to cope with these demands and whose behaviour is primarily controlled through social and self-control mechanisms. There is some question, however, as to the effectiveness of this strategy. There is evidence that integrating professionals into bureaucratic organizations creates the potential for a “clash of cultures”. Conflict emerges when salaried professionals engage in behaviour directed towards increasing their own autonomy (or in some cases maintaining it) and management implement control systems designed to control that behaviour. This paper argues that the degree of conflict experienced will depend on the individual role orientation of the professional and the extent to which management confront professionals with bureaucratic administrative systems which restrict their self-regulatory activities. The study was undertaken in a large public teaching hospital in Australia and the results support the theoretical position taken in the paper.

The relation between employee organizational and professional development activities

Abstract
A model is presented showing hypothesized common and parallel antecedents of employee organizational development activity (ODA) versus professional development activity (PDA). A common antecedent is expected to affect both ODA and PDA, while a parallel antecedent is expected to affect its corresponding work referent. This model was tested using a sample of 197 medical technologists over a four year time period. Prior ODA and PDA were controlled for before testing hypotheses. Results showed that the common antecedent of learning motivation was a robust indicator of both ODA and PDA. Looking at parallel antecedents, job satisfaction and affective organizational commitment had a positive impact on ODA, while occupational satisfaction and affective occupational commitment had a positive impact on PDA. ODA had a negative impact on subsequent intent to leave organization, but PDA did not have a similar impact on intent to leave profession. Study limitations, issues around operationalizing ODA and PDA, and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract
The subject of improving the fracture toughness of brittle epoxy resins is receiving significant attention in order to improve the design strain of fiber-reinforced composites for aerospace structural applications. Various rubber-modified and particle-filled epoxy resins have been considered as candidate materials. Such modified resins have been observed to yield a ten- to thirty-fold increase in fracture toughness compared to the unmodified material. In order fully to utilize the potential of such materials, it is necessary to understand the failure mechanisms leading to the improvement in toughness. This paper provides a critical review of the existing theories that have been proposed for the various toughening mechanisms related to modified epoxy resins.

Abstract
Fracture energy data are presented for an epoxy-alumina trihydrate composite system in which both the volume fraction and particle size of the dispersion were changed. These data show that the fracture energy of a brittle epoxy composite can be significantly increased by choosing the proper volume fraction and particle size of the dispersed second phase. The results are discussed in terms of several mechanisms which could account for the observed increase in fracture energy. A recently proposed mechanism of crack interaction with a second phase dispersion is qualitatively consistent with these results
